The BBB will be hosting 'Secure Your ID Day' sponsored by Michigan First Credit Union on Saturday, October 17, 2009 from 8 – 11 am. BBB ‘Secure Your ID Day’ will take place in the parking lot of Michigan First Credit Union’s Lathrup Village headquarters: 27000 Evergreen Road (Intersection of 11 Mile Road/I-696 & Evergreen Road). Residents and small businesses are encouraged to attend the event to be proactive in protecting their identities by shredding and properly disposing of their sensitive paper documents. BBB staff will also be on-site to provide advice and tips for identity theft protection.
Properly destroying documents that contain sensitive personal and financial information is an important first step in fighting identity theft, but it doesn’t end there,” said Tim Burns, Public Affairs Director for the Better Business Bureau Serving Eastern Michigan. “That’s why BBB staff will also be on hand to provide information on simple steps everyone can take as part of their normal daily routines to prevent ID theft.”
Documents will be shredded by the document destruction company SHRED-IT. SHRED-IT will dispose of three bags/boxes of documents at no charge during the October 17 event. There will be a $10 per bag/box charge for those exceeding the FREE promotion. These fees will be donated to the BBB Educational Foundation which provides consumer education materials and programs to the public. In addition to keeping these documents out of the hands of scam artists, all the paper that is shredded during BBB ‘Secure Your ID’ Day will be recycled, thus avoiding landfills.
BBB ‘Secure Your ID’ Day will take place rain or shine.
