A new email phishing scam hit Better Business Bureau (BBB) and consumers across the country late last week. The fake emails appear to be from StubHub — a website that allows users to buy and sell tickets to sporting and entertainment events. The site’s name is used to trick victims into providing personal information.

The Better Business Bureau Serving Eastern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula has received several complaints over the last few weeks from people across the country inquiring about a company identified as UNITED COMMERCIAL CREDIT, allegedly located on E. Fort Street in Detroit, Michigan. Consumers are informing the BBB that they have been approved for a secured loan but are required to wire a collateral deposit of $700 - $1000.00 to cover insurance on their loan.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has received consumer inquiries regarding yet another “Sweepstakes/Telemarketing” scam. Consumers are receiving phone calls indicating they have won a lump sum amount of $3,500,000.00 U.S. dollars. But before funds are made available, the scammers require their victims to wire $25,000.00 U.S. dollars to cover insurance costs.

The FTC is warning small businesses that an email with a subject line “URGENT: Pending Consumer Complaint” is not from the FTC. The email says that a complaint has been filed with the agency against their company. The FTC advises not to click on any of the links or attachments with the email. Clicking on the links may install a virus on the computer.

Scammers are always looking to make a quick buck, and with consumers concerned about harmful exposure to cell phone emissions, many scammers are looking to promote “shields” that can protect from the cancer causing waves. Better Business Bureau (BBB), along with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are warning consumers to be on the lookout for these so-called “shields” and advising consumers to turn to free options when limiting exposure to cell phone electromagnetic emissions.
