"Smishing" ALERT

SMISHING ALERT An alert from the BBB Serving Eastern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula warns cell phone users about the most recent “smishing” scam. Smishing is a relatively new twist on an old scam that capitalizes on the explosive growth in smartphones. A smishing scam is a phishing scam that is sent to you via SMS text to your phone, instead of via email to your computer. Smishing scams utilize well known retailers' names and popularity, such as Walmart and Best Buy, to encourage the “winner” to click on the impostor’s website to claim their prize. If you click on the link in the text message to sign-up for the free gift card, you will be asked for personal information that could be used to steal your identity.

BBB Advice on Hiring Contractors Following the Tornados

Southfield, MI – March 16, 2012 – Better Business Bureau (BBB) urges citizens to use caution as they hire contractors to repair damages to their homes and businesses following the recent tornados and storm damage sustained in the region. While seeking a contractor in the wake of storm damage is an urgent affair, BBB advises people to take the time to make sure a contractor is reputable and qualified to perform the work PRIOR to hiring them to help protect from unsatisfactory work and rip-offs.

Kony 2012 Video Sends Mixed Message to Young Activists

The BBB Wise Giving Alliance has tried for six years to get Invisible Children to cooperate in a charity review. Since 2006, BBB has sent 18 letters (12 via Certified Mail) to the non-profit behind the Internet phenomenon Kony 2012 video, but has received no response. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance initiates charity reviews based on donor requests. Unlike other charity review organizations, it does not rely solely on public documents but requires charities to provide more in-depth information in order to evaluate its governance, effectiveness, finances, fund raising, donor privacy and other matters.
